Adel Al-Assaf

Adel Al-Assaf started his professional carrier at his family’s Engineering Firm, Mahmoud Al-Assaf Engineering Office. Being close to his father’s daily life he developed early engineering and professional learning skills. His academic, professional and environmental interests created a character with multidisciplinary interest. His experience was refined as he worked with international engineering firms outside Jordan. Being one of the distinguished students at Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) he was granted an internship to Tokyu Corporation – Tokyo, Japan. There he had the chance to comprehend the Japanese way of thinking. He also had the chance to develop an engineering experience in Railways and the design of light transit facilities. After he graduated from JUST he worked at his father’s office for five years in the design of buildings. At that period his interest was not only focused on the office design work but also on many other activities: He pursued his master’s degree at the University of Jordan where he had the chance to strengthen his relation with the academic community in Amman.

He also pursed an Environmental Impact Assessment course. After the EIA course he delivered three lectures on the “Environmental Impact Assessment of Geology and Soils” in three conferences. He presented related examples of environmental cases in Jordan. He joined the Jordan Engineers Association professional activities and started working with the Information Technology Committee.

He was nominated to serve as the committee secretary. He also joined the Research and Development Committee for a few years. Being an active member in the IT and the R&D committees gave him the experience of teamwork and organizing events. At the end of year 2002 he decided to pursue the PhD Degree in the USA. He joined Washington State University (WSU) in Pullman, WA for four years. Through his stay at WSU he was granted a research assistantship position, to study the Aerodynamic Response of the “Existing” Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The study was sponsored by the US Federal Highway Administration and supervised by the Washington State Department of Transportation. Then he moved to work with KPFF Consulting Engineers in Seattle, WA. The major projects that he worked on were seismic evaluation and retrofit of existing bridges built in the 1960’s in Seattle Area. He also helped in designing new highway bridges and waterfront structures. He returned back to Jordan in Spring 2008.

He started working for Arabtech-Jardaneh Engineers and Architects, where he resumed his diverse activities. He started focusing on environmental awareness activities and on Information Technology issues. He broke new ground in Arabtech-Jardaneh by initiating the idea of Green Design Unit. The initiative was well-accepted by the company mangers. Based on that, he dedicated part of his time to get more involved in this activity by joining Green Building committees. Adel was a member of the Eco-cities Committee at the Ministry of Environment and he is also a member of the Green Unit at the A&E Business Council. He was also part of the academic body in Jordan. He taught several graduate courses at the University of Jordan –Amman, namely, Earthquake Resistant Structures, Highway Bridge Engineering, Dynamics of Structures and Advanced Mechanics of Materials.
